The holiday was inspired by a woman named Anna Jarvis, who wanted to honor her mother and all mothers for the sacrifices they made for their children.
Anna Jarvis’s mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, was a social activist who worked to improve the lives of women and children. During the Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis organized Mother’s Day Work Clubs to help mothers learn how to care for their children. The clubs also provided medical care for those who couldn’t afford it.
After Ann Reeves Jarvis passed away in 1905, Anna Jarvis decided to honor her mother’s legacy by organizing a memorial for her. She held the first Mother’s Day celebration in 1908 at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. The celebration was a success, and Anna Jarvis campaigned to make Mother’s Day a national holiday.
